Foundations of a SMART Goal Almost every business will ask their employees to write a SMART goal for the year, and then the question comes up; how does someone write a SMART goal? There is said to be many different acronyms for SMART, but the basic meaning is specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound. There are a few basics to get someone started on creating a goal and they are needing to find a goal to set, locking that goal in, and setting milestones along the way. Like everything else in life, a goal has to start somewhere too. The goal that needs to be set has to be attainable, relevant, and specific. A goal needs to be attainable because if it’s not, it will be easier to give up on the goal. It also needs to be attainable so the end result can be seen, and the goal setter doesn’t have to shoot for the moon to achieve the goal. When the goal is attainable, and the goal setter sees progress and the success of the goal coming closer, it can boost self-esteem. A goal also needs to be relevant because if it is not, why is it a goal the goal setter is thinking about? When a goal is relevant, the goal setter is more likely to do their best to reach the goal, and see it through. A goal also needs to be specific. It needs to answer the questions who, what, where, and why (SMART Criteria). It can’t be too vague otherwise …show more content…
When creating milestones, it will create the sense of accomplishment and the goal setter will feel like they are going somewhere in their goal. A milestone will also make a goal seem less long and drawn out. After a milestone is hit, it will make it seem like the goal setter is accomplishing a lot more in a short amount of time. When there are awards along the way, a goal can be fun to accomplish and rewarding. By creating milestones, and awards to go along with the milestone goals are a lot less scary to
