I don’t believe that any town should just give up and die. Smaller towns tend to have less to work with but that’s no excuse for allowing their city to fall into ruins. Community leaders and members have to realize that growth doesn’t just happen magically, it must be worked for. Community leaders have to research and find brokers and economic developers to help their town to grow and flourish. This allows those brokers and developers to grow their assets and the community to grow in ways they could of never imagined.…

It is easy to get a label and hard to get rid of one. There are many downfalls of growing up in a small town, such as lack of diversity, opportunity and privacy as well as extremely cold, long winters. I think that the benefits are different for everyone.…

Before moving to the city of Portsmouth, Virginia I grew up in the small country town of Lavaca, Arkansas. While some aspects of living in the city is consistent with living in the country, the city lifestyle offers more convenience, experiences, and opportunities. Growing up in a town with a population of around two thousand people means being a part of a tight knit community. I was surprised to find that same sense of community living in a town of over ninety-six thousand people. I have built friendly relationships with many of my neighbors and attended community events and gatherings in the same way I did living in the country.…

Place is needed to stabilize and orient us as families, community members and citizens. I agree with McClay and McAllister that the connections to a physical place are important. If we no longer hold importance to place then we will no longer have a sense of identity as members of a community. Place plays a necessary role in building the basis for people to find individual identity. A place that one identifies as “home” serves as “an anchor for our memories”(Solnit 139).…

Where I am from there are many different things that affect local business. I am from Stoneville and the main demographics that affect the local businesses in my area are lack of employment and the population. In Stoneville most people have to go out of town to work, because there just isn't any employment in town which really affects our locals businesses, because most of the people that live here spend most of their time out of town so our businesses don't really get any business therefor they fail. Most of the population of Stoneville is older people because Stoneville doesn't really have anything that attracts younger people to the area.
