4 October 2015 small town airport Airplanes are something that most of us are familiar with; you’ve heard about them, seen them or maybe even traveled on one. I have heard about them my entire life, yet never cared to look into them. However I am nit talking about the kind of airplane you are mostly likely painting a picture of right now; I am talking about homemade airplanes. As the project approached I took this opportunity to get to know my dad and group of people he fly’s with a little better than I have before. I studied and observed this group over a short period of time. I took notes, pictures, did interviews and even experienced flying first hand. Throughout this ethnography I am going to give you an insight of the lives of this group of people and my adventure. September 26th of 2015 was my first day of observation, and I focused mainly on the setting, and who was there. The setting is at a small private airport right off the highway, in Erwin North Carolina, which is also a small town. There are 13 different shelters, each with one airplane inside. They all had on jeans, some type of tennis shoes, and t-shirts. Some wore baseball caps and some did not. The clothes they wore were obviously clothes they could get dirty in. When I got there all the men were sitting outside with their chairs in a line facing the runway just talking. Every now and then they would get up and go look as each other’s planes or go to the bathroom. I overheard them talking about the weather, stories from their childhood, and the news.
