Small Groups Tannen Analysis

Decent Essays
I agree with what Tannen said about boys and girls in the classroom. I do believe that girls tend to talk more in small groups, but in my opinion it doesn't matter if it's mixed gender or a single gender group, as long as I am in a small group i feel comfortable to talk. I think girls feel free talking and giving their opinion in small groups. For example, when i'm in a classroom I like being in small groups because it makes me feel comfortable and I feel like they are actually hearing what I got to say and that way everyone who is in the group can have a chance to talk. From my perspective I think that if it's a one gender group then it would be louder than if it was mixed because boys are comfortable with boys and girls are comfortable

Diagnostic Writing Assignment Tannen has a very interesting point. She states that boys are more susceptible to learn in a more hostile environment such as criticizing and tearing apart the the message that they have read. Girls on the other hand want to talk out what they have read and try to relate to the message. I agree with Tannen and the claims she states about how girls and boys learn in different ways.…

Just as Deborah Tannen’s observation on gender in the classroom, I too, have noticed that males and females get along better in their own social circles. Although both genders bond better within their own circles, they differ in several ways; and in result, affecting the motives and behaviors of others around them. For example, males bond differently than females in the way that, males tend to bond with one another by making insults towards each other jokingly, whereas; females tend to bond with one another through gossip, and secret keeping; therefore males were obnoxious in play, whereas females seemed to be more conservative and secret. Another difference would be of those who that spoke up during class. For instance, males liked to take…

Academically, the female student body tends to be more dedicated and organized with their homework. In the halls, you would be sure to find the girls holding in their arms little planners covered with hearts and the latest patterns. Boys, on the other hand, could be found rushing to class to beat the bell with all their homework shoved into one tiny notebook and leaving a trail of papers behind them. In study hall, you could find the girls working on their homework and doing their independent reading throughout the time given. The boys would be glued behind their computer screens playing the latest war games or reading up on the latest sports news.…

What was found is that while Anderson thought she was gender neutral, she found that in science, more attention was given to the boys in verbal (speaking) and non verbal form (smiling) and used more leading questions with girls but not boys. (Anderson, n.d.). The use of leading questions is interesting, by not asking the students a question directly, it demonstrates to the student that the teacher does not think they are not yet competent in that…

American University professors David and Myra Sadker work together to expose gender bias in the education system. In the excerpt “Hidden Lessons,” from their book Failing at Fairness: How Our Schools Cheat Girls (1994), the Sadkers shed light on social injustices within the education system. They use examples from controlled simulations to show their audience how gender bias happens right before their eyes. Their argument says that there is gender bias in schools, but many teachers, parents, and students aren’t even aware of it.…

I have experienced this situation throughout my high school. I always see girls in cliques or small groups where they have confidence in stating their opinions. These behaviors correlate with the type of response that men and women give in classroom discussions. They represent totally different ways of expressing a person’s opinion. Tannen describes in her article, “Many women bond by talking about the troubles, and many men bond by exchanging playful insults and put-downs, and other thoughts of verbal sparring” (346).…

America prides itself on being a land of equality. Theoretically no one person has more inherent opportunity than another. Yet America, just like most modern cultures, suffers from power distance and gender inequality. It can crop up in any area of life, but perhaps most spotlight is the workplace. As a hopeful future elementary teacher, I am fortunate to belong to a that sees less of these injustices than other majors (engineering for example).…

Girls are expected to be submissive, less aggressive, popular, beautiful, and take on traditional nurturing roles; while boys are expected to be active, dominate, aggressive, and more independent. My school, friends, and community also emphasized appropriate gendered behavior. As mentioned in a previous assignment, I learned from my friends that having stuffed animals was not considered masculine, and when we were having recess at school, I learned the socially acceptable ways for boys to behave. The youth sports I participated in also taught me acceptable gender behavior. They were structured in the same way as the soccer league described by Michael Messner.…

Same-Sex Schools Controversy over gender-segregated versus coeducational classrooms has raged over the past several decades. Among the arguments there are four primary sources of contention. These include socialization, stereotyping, academic gain/loss, and whether or not students should be allowed an option between coed or single-sex classes. Opponents claim that the negatives far outweigh the positives for both boys and girls while supporters of this system of classroom division maintain that students profit in numerous ways. “In the United States, part of the rationale for single-sex schooling is the view that adolescents create a culture in school that is at odds with academic performance and achievement” (Hughes).…

In this article, becoming a Gendered Body by Karin A. Martin, the social problem being researched is how bodily differences are constructed. The idea investigated are how gender differences and bodily differences throughout school, could possibly be the beginning of gender inequality. Observing the practices that take place in not only the school curriculum, but the physical instructions in and out of the classroom. These actions appear to have the ability to shape young children into their expected societal gender roles. Sometimes I would have them co-ed and others all boys and all girls. Co-ed small groups will be beneficial because it would bring the perspectives of both sexes to the table. They would be able to hear and understand each other 's point of view and learn how to work together as the body of christ and brothers and sisters. They would gain knowledge on how they can witness to someone of the opposite sex if that ever came up. Everyone is so different in their mindsets that it is good to hear from other people and it is good to be open to doing things they may think the group should try.…

Studies have proven that kids same sex classes get better grades, but grades aren't the only thing that matters. Having boys and girls together helps kids develop as a person, because they're exposed to more, therefore we should not have girls and boys separated into different classes in school. First off, there are more than just two genders. Where are you planning on putting the kids that don't fit into those two, very small, society conforming, boxes? What about non-binary or gender-fluid kids, to name just two of the other possibilities.…

Boys and girls should be separated in the class room. The first reason boys and girls should be separated in the classroom is that they will not focus on the teacher as well when there are distractions from the opposite sex, and let the teacher felling un comfortable. For example, when the teacher asks the students question in the class, the boys try to answer the question even they do not know what is the question is talking about, or they do not understand the question. They just want to get the attention from the girls and they want to say that the boys smarter than girls. This situation lessens the improvement of learning for the girls, which can then lessen the improvement the education for the country.…
