Small Group Reflection Paper

My small group, the Dominators, has been very proactive from the start. We scheduled our first meeting on Tuesday, September 15, one hour before class started. This meeting helped our group to get ahead of the game and prepare for our group proposal and service project. The phrase “communication is key” replayed in my head during our meeting. Communication is defined in our book, Communicating in Small Groups, as “how you make sense out of the world and share that since with others” (p.50). I believe that our group did an excellent job of fulfilling this task. When discussing what community service project our group should partake in one member suggested volunteering at a golf center. Through communication, as a group we decided to go in a …show more content…
Two of the members in our group are global students. Across the world different countries all have different norms. One issue that I believe is getting in the way of our group is what our norms are. “Norms are standards that establish which behaviors are normally permitted or encouraged within the group and which are forbidden or discouraged” (50), as described in the Communicating In Small Groups textbook. For me making jokes and laughter is a huge way to connect with other members of my group. Because of the language barrier and different norms my group has a hard time, as a whole, connecting. Another example that our cultural different norms can be seen is the way we sit. I am accustomed to sitting very close to the people that I am working with but other people in my group do not feel this way. There are 4 of us that sit closer while the other two are more spread out from the group. This becomes a disadvantage to our group because of the separation. At times there would be two conversations going on just because of the distance. I believe that one thing I can do to improve the performance of this group is be more elaborative. The important group role of elaboration helps explain an idea in different ways so that all group members understand. The group norm issue can easily be solved through the technique of elaboration. If one group member does not understand what is being discussed, elaborating

Collaboration is the process of working together with others to improve a piece of writing. It is a process in which others revise one’s original work and give the author advise on how to edit their piece of writing. Different perspectives are shared and taken into consideration, thus allowing the author to get a fresh pair of eyes on their writing other than their own. It is a very important step when completing a paper because it helps us be able to see the improvements needed to be made that we might not have noticed. Project 1:…

Deciding to be in a huge group of friends or being in a lesser group of friends is a tough decision. In my opinion, I would rather be part of a lesser group of friends. I would be part of a lesser group for an amount of reasons. To start off, there are fewer awkward social moments as there are less individuals to deal with. Moments where you are arguing with people in this group would also be reduced as well.…

Learning can be interpreted in many ways to different individuals, although to me learning is about gaining knowledge and embracing every experience encountered and linking it to any task. Also I would explain that being open minded is a strong attribute to apply during the learning process. During my week one I stated that learning is to open and broaden an individual’s mind on subjects to gain knowledge or skills, and I’ve grown to realize its more than that. People can learn using different methods and be more responsive to one rather than the other. I am a Strong-Willed learner.…

Our group has had a rough start and a rough finish for project 1. The group consisted of eight people and one would think with eight people the work would not have been so tough. However, we did work well together when we did work, we collaborated and agreed on ideas, and we worked together to achieve some sort of product. Unfortunately along the way there were communication issues, and confusion.…

The issues of diversity and power that are illustrated in the group allowed my group to work in new ways that we have not worked before, however it brought a few challenges along with strengths. Some diversity in our group include, age, family roles, work schedules, traditional and non-traditional student status, socioeconomic status, and we all come from different areas in Maryland. The diversity in the group created a few challenges for us, however we all put in good efforts and attitudes and worked around each other’s schedules. Family roles and work schedules were the challenges that we faced in the group. The work schedules and family schedules collided creating a challenge for us to all meet with each other, however we over came that by using social media and email.…

A significant event in this particular group meeting was that Corey shared with us how he was feeling and tried to share with us what he was going thru, even when he knew that any of us have had the same experience that he has or a similar one. There were some goals expressed, Jen shared that that she was promoted in her job and she is so happy about it and Natalie. T shared that she started the gym as she has planned and that she hopes to continue going. And personally, for the first time I spoke in the group, like I said before, at this point in the group if I have something to say can help a member or make him or her feel better, I will do it. There were not any conflicts, it was a passive meeting this week.…

Throughout the year, as a class we have been given many different challenges in either the form of an essay, speech, or group presentation. The final assignment given to us was a group project presentation. From growing up in an age filled with technology, I have come to love projects that revolve around making some form of a PowerPoint presentation. This PowerPoint though, was both difficult and interesting for the reasons of being assigned group members not of my own choosing, learning to listen to others ideas which can help me to learn something new, and using former knowledge while working together to create a clean, in depth, and well prepared presentation. With working in groups of students whom I have known since I was young but…

I have been taking this class for nearly three months. During three months, I learned a lot about small group communication, especially the group climate and interaction are going well in our group. Our group works well on building and keeping positive attitude to our assignments and supportive climate. Each group member devotes to create an atmosphere that our group is the best group. For instance, our group member Erik and Jo always said some words of praise and encouragement, such as “we are really a good group”.…

“As important as the participation of group member is to group synergy, no one wants to encourage participation from members who are obnoxious or bent on sharing misinformation”. (J. Dan Rothwell, pp 276). 3 out of 5 group members were only focused on finishing their portion of the work, which complicated the whole project because it has to be done by the member who proposed the change. Low participation is the problem I felt that we encounter in this group project. I was fully motivated, and willing to spend more time with it; however, not all members were doing effective communications to follow through.…

In reality it can be stated that communication is most significant part of a leader ability to function. Furthermore, having an open communication is key role in developing effective group. To accomplish multiple tasks leaders uses several different forms of communications, email Phone calls, or any documents that convers information to the group. To understand how communication affect groups its imperative that leaders know “communication is a simultaneous process in which members receive, send, interpret, and infer all at the same time.” (Johnson, Johnson 2013, pg 73)…
