Small Group Lesson

All the students except for one Hispanic student, are African American. Even though the students are from similar cultural backgrounds, they can find physical characteristics that are different about each other. The students all come from low socioeconomic households. Many students live in one parent households and if the parent is working they may not have assistance with their homework. Therefore, most of the students prefer small group lessons, where they can engage in discourse and receive one on one assistance. Students had the chance to work in pairs and small groups, to assist each other with identifying similarities and differences in lessons one and two. The class consists of one student with an IEP, one ELL student and five struggling readers. Thinking about the students’ experiences, cultural, and language backgrounds and interests, brings up different supports to use to assist them in successful learning. Most of the students love paired or group reading. They get very excited when the teacher says find a buddy to read with. Students will be given the opportunity to work in groups, while reading the texts they will be comparing, in lesson two. The ELL student will be provided with various visual presentations to assist him with identifying similarities and differences in texts. The pre-made illustrated vocabulary organizer and graphic organizers will be used to assist students throughout the lessons. The cut and sort pictures with words will be used to help guide students in making connections between two texts’ similarities and differences. Being in small groups as students complete the Venn diagrams will assist those students who have difficulties completing the activity. Struggling readers may also choose words or phrases from a word bank, to assist them in completing their Venn diagram activity. Illustrations that support the actions happening in the two texts will be provided for the student with the classification of Significant Developmental
