Small Group Discussions

As Nussbaum states in the article, small group discussions are an important part of education now days. Nussbaum states that small groups are important for more than one way. He explains that group discussions make it possible for more students to participate, as well as promoting higher-order thinking and active learning. He also tells readers that group discussions can help students make their own decisions and have their own opinions. Lastly he states, group discussions make it possible for all student’s views and viewpoints to be heard. I agree completely with the points that Nussbaum makes. I tend to be a lot quieter in classes, even when I do have something to say or an opinion to share. Everyone is comfortable sharing their opinions. It makes it much easier to share your thoughts when you have a supportive group who is able to give you feedback in a constructive, positive way. In class this past week we have been talking about conflict as well as how to go about confronting the person you have a conflict with. We learned about the six steps to take in order to successfully confront someone. I was able to find a conflict this past week and use this process to confront my roommates and come up with a resolution to the problem. First I identified the problem, my roommates not doing their dishes for a few days. Dishes would pile up in both the sink and the on the counter for some time before they would get done. Second I told all my roommates that I would like to sit down and talk as a whole house sometime that night. They all agreed that we could have a house meeting.
