Following the first three years of living in a small town his parents decided they were not living in a small enough community because they decided to move to crossroads in the middle of nowhere, but the middle of everything at the same time. These crossroads converged in a miniature farming community of Kiel, Wisconsin. This town could have come straight out of a country song with John Deere tractors driving down main street, the city smelling like manure for a large amount of the year, and the bar…
Chicago Five Themes of Geography When many people think of Chicago, they often think of a variety of many different things including the location of Chicago, the people, the culture, and methods of transportation throughout the city. Without realizing it, individuals often relate Chicago to the five themes of geography. By applying the five themes of geography to Chicago, people can get a good understanding of it without even visiting there. The five themes of geography include place, location, region, movement, human-environment interaction.…
I had friends that I couldn’t imagine leaving, and I liked everything about living in Zanesville. We moved to Bloomington, Indiana, partly because of my dad’s job and partly because our entire family lives in Indiana. This first move was by far the hardest and most stressful for…
When I was younger I dreamt of leaving home to explore a never ending change of landscape as I travelled the world. While I do enjoy travelling and exploring new environments, I have always imagined myself settling down somewhere in the prairies of Saskatchewan. To me that will always be my place in the world, and where I feel most at home. Despite where I may go, my home in the middle of nowhere Saskatchewan is, and will always be my true…
As human beings we inherently fear change, especially those of us with social shortcomings, who prefer routine schedules to overwhelmingly new experiences and unpredictability. Such was the case for me. My family moved when I was just turning three years old to Mount Horeb, Wisconsin, a small town of about 8,000 people, located about thirty miles from Madison. Mount Horeb is a quaint suburb known for its Norwegian heritage. It is a fine place to raise a family, but as I got older, I realized that I no longer felt welcomed and sheltered by the small and tightly-knit community, but rather I felt trapped, paralyzed by the limitations of a suffocating town.…
I thought I was a city boy that had to have the latest clothes with the latest technology and newest car, but now that I've been living in Smithville for three years I realize there is so much more to life than material things. I have made some friendships that I know will last a lifetime and I can't put a price tag on that. I use to be so afraid of change when in reality change was exactly what I needed. I thought Blue Springs was perfect and I had good friends there that I never wanted to leave, but whenever I was forced to, it opened me up to new opportunities and I wouldn't trade where I am now for anything.…
Moving to Chicago in 2014 was the hardest thing I have ever done in my life. It meant leaving my life in Puerto Rico and beginning a new one. At first I didn’t get why we had to move and I resented my dad. I figured he didn’t care about us and only wanted to move for his own convenience.…
They say the goal in life is to live the “American Dream” and I would say I am living it head first. It all started when the time in my life came to pick an Univeristy to attend, and boy am I ecstatic with my decision to attend West Virginia University. WVU opened so many doors for me; however, if it was not for my family, I would not be where I am today. I was very content with going to my local University and living at home because that was comfortable to me, but my family encourged me to find a new start.…
Have you ever been out of town to visit family and you just miss everything about home? Despite the fact that it’s Chicago and everyone thinks it’s just a horrible place to live. I’ve lived on the Southside of Chicago almost all my life in the bad and good neighborhoods and for various reasons, I believe Chicago is one of the best places to live in U.S because of the cleanliness, the wider streets, and the food. The first reason Chicago is one of the best places to live in is that of the cleanliness.…
Ms. Jacobus explains that she enjoys living in the city and enjoys the multiple recreations that are minutes away. Hospitals, transportation, and schools are convenient and are sufficient. She does hope to get a better apartment that would be closer to family, but cannot imagine living anywhere else (Lori Jacobus, personal communities, September 4, 2015). Mr. Marion does find urban living appealing and believes that community resources are adequate from what he has experienced. He states that when his job ends, which will be within the next six months, he will return to Alabama and move on to the next job (Frances Marion, personal communication, September 9, 2015).…
Bam! Bam! Bam! The door slams as my mother screams for my father to let us in, the reek of alcohol filling up my nose as I listen to his slurred words. My mother, brother, sister, and I have just arrived from a trip to see my grandmother in Mexico with no other choice we leave staying at my aunt’s house for two days.…
Moving to Wyoming “We are moving to Wyoming” my mom said. A couple days into summer vacation the plan to move was finalized. At dinner that night the whole family agreed to then proceed with this new adventure. My mother had good reason, she said we would have access to a better education in Wyoming, it would reduce the number of times we commuted over Teton pass and it would help my father’s work be less stressful. The move, for me, was difficult, but I persevered through it and became stronger in the process.…
Not me I chose Tyler, Tx and the stress of taking care of my mom, sister and helping with my 15 month old nephew. When you're nineteen years old and have all this responsibility to make money, go to school full time and still try to live a young adult life is unfortunate. How would you like it if one day your life got turned upside down by one decision you made, or you felt you were forced to make ? I had the difficult decision of coming to Tyler, Tx with my mom or going to Issaquah, WA with my dad. Having to chose between two parents and two different lives is a giant stress ball with no relief.…
A community environment serves an important function in shaping our personal development and belief system. The community an individual grows up in says a lot about that individual as a person. With strengths, comes weaknesses and every community differs in many ways. The community I grew up in may differ from the community others lived in, and that’s what makes us all unique and different from one another. No matter if you live on Grand View Drive or you live on the south side of Chicago each community has its different problems, and just because someone may live in a different neighborhood than you doesn’t mean you are complete polar opposites it just means you experience obstacles differently in your daily routine and that is completely…
When I moved to Orlando, Florida, I was twelve years old. I did not know what to expect when it came to the Orlando weather, their school system or their people. My mom called me one day when I was on my way home from school and told me we would be moving, at the time I did not know where we were moving to, but I knew I was not going to be okay with moving away from my neighborhood friends who I have been friends with since the second grade. Once I came home, the majority of our house was already in boxes and I refused to pack any of my belongings because at the time I did not want to accept the fact that we were moving to an entire different state.…
