Small Catechism: What Does It Mean To Believe In God

What does it mean to believe in God? According to Luther’s Small Catechism, “It means I trust God and His promises and accept as true all He teaches in the Holy Scriptures” (102). Everyone agrees that the Earth exists with growing and changing life, but some believe that there is a God who is in control of everything while others believe there is not a God and everything is random. There is a God who is seen through the design in all things on Earth, the moral standards in society, and the faith in God’s word. Look at nature and you see beautiful design. You can see it in animals like bees, which use specific dances to communicate (Richards 141). Graceful gazelles have a cooling system in their brains to cool them down while escaping enemies (Richards 134). Also, army ants build nests out of living worker ants to protect eggs since they are always moving (Richards 143). Thought was put into these creatures not just chance, thoughts of a creator. There is order to our universe which can be seen in the natural laws such as the laws of motion and the laws of thermodynamics. As Thomas Aquinas stated, “Nothing can cause itself” (Price 33). In the Bible, we constantly see God telling us to believe in him. “You shall have no other Gods before me” Exodus 20:3, which means “that you are to fear and love God” (Luther 13). God provides for us. Psalm 145: 15-16 “The eyes of all look to you and you give them their food at the proper time. You open your hand and satisfy the desires of every living thing.” Commanding us to believe, God is making himself known. “The Heavens declare the glory of God; the skies declare the work of his hands” Psalm 19:1.
