Parents agree that disciplining children is a hard task. They definitely seek the best constructive ways to address this vital issue. They unquestionably strive to provide their kids’ with the best life essentials that would help the children to be good and independent individuals. Some parents believe that smacking is a necessary disciplinary measure that ultimately aims to rectify their children’s wrong and unacceptable behaviors. However, others consider any type of physical punishment of children is abusive, no matter how trivial and safe it might be. This essay tries to answer the following question: why is smacking children sometimes needed? The essay supports the opinion that views harmless smacking as a justified behavior for three main reasons, namely: it inflicts no serious damage, it is an effective part of child-rearing strategy, and it may be less, if not the least, destructive than any other non-physical punishment.
