Sylvester Stewart known as Sly Stone and Sly And The Family Stone’s lead singer was born March 15, 1944 to Alpha Stewart and K.C Stewart in Denton, Texas. The family (five kids including :Loretta, Sylvester, Freddie, Rose, and Vaetta Stewart) was very involved with the church, even when the family moved to San Francisco so Sylvester and his siblings were always raised with gospel music as well as singing in church, this had a huge impact on his sound as he grew older and entered different bands. He got his iconic nickname in grades school from a friend who misspelled “Sylvester” with “Slyvester” so after that it got shortened to just”Sly”, which stuck with him.
