SCFE “Click, Step. Click, Step. Click, Step.” The sound that disregarded as I wandered through the halls of Cromwell Middle School. My simple mind, only 13 years of age, attempted continuously ignore the signals my hip was trying to send to the rest of my body; Its restrained cry for help, seeking some type of medical attention which it direly needed after nearly a month of neglect. The unfateful day was February 26, 2012. It was on this sunny cloudy morning that the Cromwell Rebels drove up to Farmington to play a travel basketball game. Little did I know of the events that were to occur. Around mid-way through the third quarter, a three was jacked up by a player from the opposing team, ricocheting off the back rim and landing in my hands. Yale New Haven Hospital's medical unit diagnosed me with S.C.F.E.: Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis. This injury, usually in the event of a fall, causes the head of the hip to slip backwards at the point of connection between the bone and growth plate. The doctor told me that I was very lucky; Most cases are to be diagnosed within 24 to 48 hours, and extended use of the leg outside of this time frame could result in lost flexibility of the joint, in addition to premature osteoarthritis. Based on my circumstances, being 504 hours outside the regular diagnosis time and partaking in a very rigorous schedule of physical activities, I should’ve been a lost cause. Fortunately, thanks to the diligent work of the staff at Yale, I completed successful surgery and was able to return to physical activity in three months without physical
