Recently, a strange fad has been causing a shortage of school glue in several stores. Lots of people, the majority being teens, have been purchasing glue to make their own slime. Slime is a therapeutic, putty-like material that is made by mixing glue and a product containing Sodium Borate. The borate reacts with the polyvinyl alcohol in the glue, creating a gooey, stress relieving substance.
Mattel created the first slime in the winter of 1976, it was labeled as a toy. It was bright green, and came in a tiny plastic trash can of the same color. It became popular in the “Disco Era”, due to of the popularity of neon colors during that time. For most people, when slime is mentioned, Nickelodeon comes to mind. Often during Award Shows on Nick, bright green slime is poured over the heads of unsuspecting people, usually those presenting or receiving the awards.
Scientifically, slime is strange because it can’t easily fit into one of the 3 states of matter. It’s neither a solid, or a liquid. And it’s definitely not a gas. If I were to categorize it, I’d say the slime I make is more of a solid than a liquid. On the other hand, I’d say the Nickelodeon slime is more of a liquid, since it’s so runny, and can be poured.

At least it is now that I’m using Borax, instead of my mom’s Tide. The Borax works better anyway, considering that it doesn’t have a scent, or tint the slime blue. The slime does bear a clean scent from the soap and lotion, though. Sometimes people add things to their slimes to make it fancier of change the texture. Adding cornstarch, baby powder, or shaving cream makes the slime softer. Some people add Styrofoam beads, which turns the slime into “floam”. People also add normal beads. I even saw someone use tiny pieces of paper towel, and call it papier-mache
