Sleeve gastrectomy is considered to be a restrictive form of weight loss surgery, where the size of the stomach is reduced by about 75%. During surgery, the stomach is divided vertically from top to bottom creating a small banana-shaped stomach. The pyloric valve at the bottom of the stomach is left intact and is therefore able to regulate the emptying of its contents into the small intestine (Refer to Figure 3 below). This allows the stomach’s function to remain unaltered, although its size is decreased (British Obese Surgery Patient Association, 2014).
