Sleepless In Seattle Analysis

Sleepless in Seattle is considered to be one of the most famous romantic movies in history. (AFI's All Time Top 10) However, the romance depicted in the movie is unlikely to happen in real world. In other word, the movie embodies some romantic myths that are actually dangerous for people in relationships to pertain. The movie talks about a widowed father, Sam, and a beautiful journalist, Annie, drawn together by destiny. Annie heard a sad story of a grieving man on the radio. She then gradually started to believe that they're destined to be together. However she has already engaged with her fiancé and didn’t know Sam at all. The movie showed that destiny takes a magical hand and let the couple fall in love. (Romantic myth) Myth #1 appeared through out the movie. Lovers are destined to be together and nothing would separate them. Movies typically manifest this idea by creating two people who are born to be with each other. They will face lots of obstacles when they pursue their happiness, but nothing can separate them and fate will bring them together at the end. This movie manifests itself by depicted the female character, Annie, lives in Baltimore, while Sam lived in distant Seattle. With totally different job and such distance, it is highly probable that these two people will not have a chance to know each other in their life.
