Researchers have begun to find that almost 20 percent of americans suffer from a sleeping disorder any given year. But what does it really mean to have a sleeping disorder? Sure being tired is normal but how does one know they have a disorder? Turns out most of the individuals don’t, they just assume their bodies are worn down and tired. I actually was diagnosed with insomnia when I was ten years old. It began with innocent nightmares. Eventually the nightmares got too much for me and I started fearing sleep. I would stay up until 6 A.M. when the sun would come up and fall asleep only to wake up at 7:30 to go to school. But things began to become much harder in middle school. Mornings moved to starting at 5:30 or 6:00 because school started earlier. Obviously I began to run into problems. The nightmares weren’t as bad but my body had adapted to staying up and not sleeping no matter what until the sun came up. Well if I wasn’t going to bed until 6 and mornings started at 6 when did I get sleep? Well that's the problem I never did. I was very involved with cheer and choir almost everyday which made for long days. Long days and no rest just began not working for my body. I have an inflammatory immune disorder which as a young kid around 5 I was diagnosed with, the doctors said they might never find a cause or cure for me and I still do blood and gene testing with research teams in Vanderbuilt.
