Sleeping Beauty And Mlan Gender Roles

Great Essays
In most Disney princess movies there are many depictions of feminine roles that automatically sends the message to little girls that they must me gentle, obedient, emotional, etc. The characteristics that are shown in Disney movies do show the differences between the stereotypical masculine traits and the stereotypical feminine traits. These traits are definitely evident in the movies Sleeping Beauty and Mulan. Both of these films have numerous depictions of these traits with the characters that are portraying these specific gender roles. In the movie Sleeping Beauty, the narrator begins by telling the story of King Stephen and his fair queen. What caught my attention with this statement was that the King’s name was mentioned but the Queen‘s name wasn’t. All we know about the Queen is that she is beautiful. The kingdom has been waiting for the arrival of the new princess Aurora. She was named after the dawn, she brought sunshine to the kingdom, and a special holiday …show more content…
These women are able to lead their own lives, despite of the many responsibilities that are placed on them. Although there are only a few of women in the movie, they are all seen differently and play very significant roles. They see and entreat life as normal, and simply live their lives as commonly as others live theirs. All of the women in Mulan manage to fit full lives into the mold they are expected to fit into. For example, Fa Li, Mulan’s mother doesn’t try to oppose or go against Fa Zhou when he says that Mulan is dishonoring or punishing her. She was seen as the traditional housewife and mother in the film. She does not M punish Mulan for being different from the other girls in China. She is very supportive and comforting to Mulan even after she caused chaos with the matchmaker. In this sense I see her as a loving mother who is patient, loving, caring and

I believe this because even though she dishonored the Chinese army and let everyone down including her family, she was still determined to go on after breaking multiple laws and the rules of chinese culture. Near the end of the movie when Mulan defeats the Huns and the empire of China is safe, people still fail to recognize her great feat just because she is a girl. After Mulan had defeated the Huns the Emperor’s consultant Chi Fu, said, ” This is a woman. She will never be worth anything.” This goes to show that even if a woman saved a nation from disaster, she would still be judged and her accomplishments would be looked at differently because she was a…

Not only is Fa Mu lan the hero in this story but she is also able to meet her husband and give birth to a beautiful baby all while fighting in battle. She is unable to hide the conflict she feels over wanting to have a family of her own but conversely wants to prove to her mother that she can be more than just a wife and mother. Both the characters Mulan and Squeaky are fighting the stereotype of girls, since they have someone in their daily lives who is disappointed in who they are and is trying to make them someone they are not. For example, in the movie, Mulan’s parents want Mulan to “look like a bride” and “bring honor to the family” while Squeaky’s mother wants Squeaky to “act like a girl” and wear a “white organdy dress with a big satin sash”. Both Mulan and Squeaky learn the power of confidence during their respective journeys. The glamour and beauty these princesses depict in their movies can be defined as princess culture. As young girls grow up it is not uncommon for them to admire this princess culture. However, in today's society the stereotyping of young girls is recurring and sometimes considered discriminatory. Some feminists may argue that young girls shouldn’t be subjected to a typical “girly” childhood but instead they should be more individualistic.…
