Sleep Diary
I collected data from my sleep pattern for two weekdays and two weekend days. The first night of my study was on Wednesday September 17, 2014. I went to bed at 10:00pm, and fell asleep at 10:30pm. I woke up at 6:00am. I never awoke during the night. My total sleep time for the first night was 7 hours and 30 minutes. My quality of sleep was good. I slept very well and never awoke nor was I disturbed during the night. I never took any naps that day. My overall sleepiness/alert today is 1 out of 7. I was quite tired when I awoke at 6:00am, but as the day went on I became more alert. I went to sleep at a decent hour, but waking up at 6:00 AM, only gave me 7 hours and 30 minutes of sleep. Even though I slept well without any disturbances, I still had a hard time functioning; I never got to my full alertness until noon.
On the second night of my study. Weekday two Thursday, September 18, 2014. I went to bed at 9:00pm, and fell asleep at 9:00pm; I fell asleep as soon as my head touched the pillow. I never awoke during the night. My total nighttime sleep was 9 hours. My quality of sleep was wonderful! Even though I was groggy when I first awoke, it only lasted about 30 minutes and then I was ready to start my day. I never took any naps this day. My overall sleepiness/alertness today is 1 out of 7. To the average adult, seven hours of sleep is enough to rest the mind and the body, however throughout the day many people choose to take naps. Sleep enhances subject’s memory of specific activities that occurred throughout the day. Lau (2011) conducted a study where the importance of taking a nap was assessed. He hypothesized that the participants who napped performed better than those who did not. In fact, all of my peers found it amusing how much I loved to sleep, to the point where they said I slept all the time. Teenagers and Sleep: Why They Cannot Get Enough Sleep deprivation is a common, dangerously unnoticed problem in many Americans today, especially those involved in work and education (Shaw). However, the problem is severely more apparent in the adolescent population, which can be attributed to the increased need for sleep in adolescents. Compared to children, adults, and seniors, teenagers require an abnormally large amount of uninterrupted sleep, a sharp inconsistency in the otherwise inversely linear progression of necessary sleep with age. The reason lies in a multitude of factors- due to environmental factors and the cultural day to day routine, teenagers are inhibited in their nightly rest. As a result, they are sleep deprived and lack the necessary…

People worldwide are concerned about schools starting too early in the day and have been debating about the benefits of later school start times. Every weekday, students must face the struggle of waking up early to get ready for school without getting enough sleep the night before. Schools starting at a later time during weekdays would allow students to have extra time to sleep in the morning and be more alert and focused. This can result in less sleep-related car accidents and tardies. It can also provide opportunities for students to succeed in school because studies show that alert students are more willing to study and understand concepts than if they were tired.…
