It controls our body functions and mood. There are 4 main stages of sleep (which occurs in a 90-minute cycle) and ends with REM (repaid eye movement) sleep. The first three stages are considered non-rapid eye movement or non-REM. Stage 1 is classified as light sleep it is the period between being awake and falling asleep. This stage only lasts a few minutes and can easily be disturbed with outside side influences. Stage 2 is classified as sound sleep; it is the period when the person has fallen asleep. This stage lasts for about 20 minutes and can also be easily disturbed. Stage 3 and 4 are considered deep sleep and last 30 each. In these stages the person is hard to awaken. REM sleep it occurs every 90 minutes at the end of any stage. It initially lasts for 20 minutes, but increase as sleep progresses with each cycle. During this period the eye move rapidly behind the eyelid and dreams may occur, it is very difficult to disturb during this period. The nurse must determine the individual sleep cycle because that each person cycle if different. The use of drugs or substances can either promote or disrupt sleep. A person who lives a healthy lifestyle with good eating habits, exercises and a daily routine is more likely to have REM sleep than someone who lives a sedentary non-healthy lifestyle that is chaotic with no structure. A change in environment can affect the quality of sleep. Also emotional stress causes a person to worry during bed time making it for them to fall asleep and stay asleep. The nurse should help the patient to identify drugs and stressor that may affect sleep.
