Problem: The problem we’re trying to solve is how people aren’t getting enough sleep at night which makes the person really tired in the morning, a.k.a. sleep deprivation. Sleep deprivation is the situation or condition of suffering from a lack of sleep. Sleep deprivation can be caused by many things, one of them being time. For example, if you have a big exam in school tomorrow and you don’t have enough time to study at night for the exam, that could cause sleep deprivation because they might stay up late to try to get a good grade on the test. Sleep deprivation can lead to many health problems that affect teens throughout their day, including mental health issues such as depression, issues with learning and behavior, substance use and abuse, higher obesity risk, and dependence on sleep medication. This can be a major problem in general to productivity, as not getting enough sleep can hinder performance in multiple aspects of our lives. While some of this sleep deprivation is natural due to changing body clocks, most of this is caused by teens staying up late and not having sleep as their main priority. One statistic that proves the problem with sleep deprivation is shown when the sleep foundation says, “When you are sleep deprived, you are as impaired as driving with a blood alcohol content of .08%, which is illegal for drivers in many states. Drowsy driving causes over 100,000 crashes each year. Recognize sleep deprivation and call someone else for a ride. Only sleep can save you!” (“Teens and Sleep” 2). This shows how damaging a lack of sleep can be. .08% is very high, and like the text says, over the legal drinking level in many places.
