Sleep Deprivation For College Students

Sleep for college students is of utmost importance for academic performance. This study will aim to determine the relationship between the length of sleep for college students and their grade point average. It is important to include sleep deprivation in our experience when we discuss the length of sleep for college students.
Per a previous study, Lowry, M., Dean, K., & Manders, K. (2010), sleep deprivation means having less than five hours of sleep from the previous night. Sleep deprivation diminishes academic performance of students because it directly affects the cognitive and motor processes. An example question from the survey is, “On average, how much sleep do you get on weeknights?” to which participants responded by selecting, “3 or less hours of sleep, 4 to 6 hours of sleep, 7 to 9 hours of sleep, 10 or more hours of sleep.” The researchers for this study probed the question of what their overall college grade point average (GPA) was and how many hours of sleep they receive on a week night to account for abnormalities in weekend sleep schedules. For the grade point average data, participants filled in the blank for their GPA in the survey system. The GPA was calculated, representing the average of the student’s grades during the term on a 4.0 scale.
