Sleep Deprivation: Why Sleep Causes Emotional Impairment?

From the very beginning we have always been told sleep is a very important part of our daily routine and being sleep deprivation can cause many health problems. However new findings that have been recently in the ‘Journal of Neuroscience’ now tell us that sleep deprivation not only helps the brain loose its sense of proportion but also what is important.
A research led by Prof. Talma Hendler of Tel Aviv University’s (TAU’s) Psychological Sciences and graduate student Eti Ben-Simon was conducted to see whether sleep loss triggers emotional impairments.
To test this Eti Ben- Simon kept 18 adults awake in the lab where they had to give two rounds of tests while undergoing brain mapping (fMRI and/or EEG). These 18 adults had a good night sleep the previous day and then

These new findings have once agin shown how important sleep is. When I first read this article in class we were learning about Sleep and its importance and hence it was easy for me to relate with it. After reading this article I strongly agree with the researchers conclusion. Sleep is a very important part of our daily lives and without it a lot of problems can arise. During the night, sleep cycles play a role in oraginizing what we have learnt, send , smelled, felt , etc and lack of sleep hurts these cognitive processes in many ways. However correlation does not mean causation and there can be many other reasons as to why concentration went down during the tests. ( example lack of exercise, depression, etc.)
The article “Not getting enough sleep can mess with your emotions “ is not the only article that talks about Prof. Talma Hendler and student Eti Ben- Simon findings. There were many articles related to the topic and they all have come to the same conclusion. There are many articles that are published on this topic and all done by different newspapers and magazines, sponsored by different people/company. That is why the article seems very unlikely to be biased.
