The competition for high school achievement is skyrocketing. Students are doing as many advanced classes and extracurricular activities as possible. As students sign up for these classes and activities, they dedicate that much more time to the the activity they are in. In today’s society, many students take advanced classes for college credit and participate in sports to show leadership skills. These students are slowly depriving themselves from their lack of sleep. Frank Bruni says that this is the way students are trying to gain a “competitive edge”. Sleep deprivation is becoming a very common and difficult problem. In fact, Pope, a senior lecturer from Stanford, stated that many of his students were reporting that they were only getting five hours of sleep. Students today have so much pressure and so many distractions. Parents and teachers are constantly pressuring students to do their best, causing students to stay up longer into the night to study for a test just one more time. Smartphones are also becoming an extremely negative distraction since students can stay up longer and talk to their friends all night. These actions are bad for the mental and physical health of students that are still growing. Another major issue is suicidal thoughts and actions. This is the cause of so much stress and anxiety that students have. At the University of Pennsylvania, six suicides occurred in just 13 months. The article gives many good points to show how students today are doing too much.
