It was Benjamin Franklin, who said, “Early to bed, Early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise. Benjamin Franklin’s quote is famous as representing his virtues, and this quote is familiar as representing industry as its literal meaning. However, it is true that early to bed improves a man in many ways. We may have heard about the importance of sleep not only about this quote, but also since our childhood that we have to go to bed early. People spend about 26 years, 1/3 parts in our whole lifetime, to sleep. Also, this spent time means human body already knows about the importance of sleep so our body makes human to sleep to protect their health. But most of people ignore its importance and their unconcern causes

Sleep can be divided as two types. According to Siegel, “They discovered that sleep was marked by periods of rapid eye movement, commonly known now as REM sleep”. Because non R.E.M. Sleep’s waves are slower than the R.E.M. Sleep, it is known as slow wave sleep or deep sleep. Because of their differences, non R.E.M. Sleep usually affects on physical health, but R.E.M. Sleep mostly like to affect on mental health.Sleep begins with non R.E.M. Sleep and its cycles repeat about 5 times every 90-129 minutes at one day’s night. Especially non R.E.M. Sleep gets deeper through 4 steps of sleep and during these steps, growth hormone is released and organisms are recovered. During the first step of non R.E.M. Sleep, “secretion of growth hormone starts with beginning of sleep and around half of overall growth hormone are released during the first deep sleep cycle”(Wallace). Because growth hormone has important role in stimulating body growth and maintaining bone structure, children in growing period are required to take non R.E.M. Sleep which provides the secretion of growth hormone. Also, sleep is helpful to the patients having physical pain. From the study of the Journal Sleep 2012, “ the nine-hour sleep group withstand the pain about 25% longer then seven—hour group”(Alloui). That results, having enough sleep helps to endure the pain, support why the patients usually get sleeping pills as one of their medicine. However, when people cannot get enough sleep, their health is threatened. According to the study from University of Chicago, “after four nights of less sleep, their fat cells were less sensitive to insulin, a metabolic change associated with diabetes and obesity”(Pope). If the fat cells were less sensitive to insulin, body cannot digest and absorb nutrients and it raises the risk of diabetes. Also waking up late changes human’s internal clock, and changed internal
