Melatonin is a hormone that a person’s body produces naturally, and how much melatonin a person’s brain produces depends on the light exposure a person is getting. When it is very bright outside during the day the brain does not produce very much melatonin, which helps keep a person more alert, but when it gets dark outside the brain produces more melatonin, which causes one to feel sleepy. A person can do things to help the body create more melatonin at night, which will help one get a quality night of sleep. Many people watch television or use a tablet or laptop before bed and sleep experts believe this is an error. All these things can reduce the amount of melatonin the body creates and television has also been proven to stimulate a person’s brain, which is not ideal before bedtime. It is proven that if a person wants to read before bed that it is healthier to read with a lamp rather than off a backlit device such as a tablet. Sleep experts indicate that a person will sleep better in complete darkness, and if one has to get up to use the restroom at night it is better to use a flashlight than to turn bright lights on.
