Slaves Of Technology In America

Slaves of Technology Compared to most countries, here in America we live a fairly comfortable life. Most US citizens aren’t suffering from poverty, or dealing with an over controlling government. Our longevity as a society can be attributed to advancements in technology. We rank 2nd among all countries in technological advancements, only trailing Japan, we seek out technology to help us in about every aspect of our lives. Technological advancements in medicine, transportation, communication, and defenses cannot be denied that they make our lives easier. Technology has allowed us to live longer, and it makes us feel safer than we once did. Highly Industrialized countries like the U.S do come with a higher cost of living. So what do big corporations, such as Apple do? They look to other countries for cheap labor that meets the supply and demand of the American public. Apple isn’t alone; Google, Microsoft, Intel, and Dell among other prominent companies look overseas for cheaper manufacturing of their product to keep up with the growing consumer demand. This is a very smart financial decision, but it seems to be the only thing apple cares about. Reports out of “Foxconn”, a Chinese IPad manufacturing factory has stated unsanitary working conditions, dangerous environments, and suicides. It seems Apple is all about reaping in the benefits with their latest product, while not caring if their workers suffer. This brings me to the epicenter of the problem. Apple has factories located worldwide to keep up with the growing demand of technology, but what about the employees working in these factories? Foxconn employees suffer in rough working conditions, just to make a smart device for the American …show more content…
I’m a fan of tech, I love it, but what I understand is that U.S corporations have created a monster in technology that can’t be stopped. Its either join the technological world, or fall out. You don’t really have a choice to use technology anymore. In this era, you need it. Some people can’t even function without it. Everyone has a cell phone, we love them, we need them, and they’re a vital resource, but what we fail to realize is that technology has taken control of our society. It has also taken away, more so altered, our human dignity. As humans we have the ability to communicate effectively and efficiently with other people. Famous writer, Francis Fukuyama, defines human dignity as the ability to be political, the moral values we chose to encompass, the choices we make, and the emotions we experience are all variables that make Factor X. Factor X, human dignity, it is the same thing and it’s what makes us the superior species. Now we have created something far superior, something our ancestors had never even dreamed of. Smart machines, technology, it is our doing and it’s only going to advance even further. Technology seems to have no limit to how far it can go. It has changed the way we communicate by simplifying it; it has made us into a machine

In society today, nearly everyone has a cell phone or has access to the internet in one way or another. People are constantly using technology and always connected. While this connection is quite helpful for many things, the people in a society must also be careful not to let technology control them and take away their humanity. In Ray Bradbury’s novel Fahrenheit 451 and short stories The Smile, The Pedestrian, and August 2026: There Will Come Soft Rains, he addresses a central message to society. He warns that, while the technology itself is not necessarily evil, it is and will be if humans continue to abuse it and allow it to compromise their personal humanity and the condition of humanity as a whole.…

What I’ve learned after reading two different articles on two different companies is that things haven’t changed that much in the last hundred of years. While in America, there are standards that have to be met to ensure the safety and wellness for the workers. In other countries, their regulations for factories are more lenient, resembling to the conditions of the Gilded Age with an exception of not being as extreme. Bigger corporations like Apple and Nike are having their goods produced in countries like China, Indonesia, and Vietnam so they can pay less for more work. Money makes the world go round and at the end of the day in the capitalistic America, everything boils down to how much profit you earn.…

Technology will keep changing us like it has always done throughout history, but change does not necessarily mean takeover; technology will advance as an extension of ourselves, to help us improve and make us better humans. When technological improvements are brought up, one thinks robot…
