During the 1850’s, Southerners approved the Constitution and decided to join the new nation. The South wanted to show their authority over the federal government so they could get rid of federal laws they didn't agree with, especially laws that interfere with the South's right to keep slaves. They were allowed to take the slaves wherever they wanted to. The States’ Rights were not the main concern in the South, people owning their own slaves was a much bigger deal. A major theme throughout this time period was the balance between free states and slave states. During the Civil War, the South was defending its rights, while also keeping people enslaved.
