Due to the southerners behavior toward their slaves, many slaves escaped to the north. Yet, the southerners sent their agents to reclaim the fugitives from the north. They were not willing to lose their slaves. Therefore, congress made a lot of compromises like the Missouri Compromise and the Compromise of 1850 to maintain peace. However, slavery eventually caused the civil war. However, there are some historians that think that the civil war was not necessary. They thought the slavery will eventually disappear. Instead of going on a war, there should have been a compromise to resolve conflicts. One of the historian, “Max Farrand, speculated over the outcome had the Missouri Compromise line been extended to the pacific ocean in 1850, and suggested that through its adoption “”the civil war might...have been avoided, for slavery would have been doomed before long through economic forces”” (Bonner 194). If the line was extended, there would have been more slaves states with more cruel masters. War could have been halted. However, the torture that all slaves endured would not have been ended. After the war, the thirteenth amendment declared that “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction”. Because of the Civil war, slavery was finally abolished. Otherwise, slaves would have endured torture for many more decades. The results of this war started the journey of giving black people rights that they deserve as humans and as the citizens of this
