Slavery was one of the main causes reasons for the Civil War. According to Schultz( 2013), Slavery was the root of the Civil War. At the beginning of the Civil War, neither southerner or northerners thought their societies would change drastically due to the war. Southerners thought they would keep their slaves and slavery would be prevented from spreading westward whereas northerners assumed that the southerners would realize the error and return to the Union. Another issue of the Civil War was states' rights. Southern states wanted to be able to proclaim their authority over the federal government. They wanted to have the power to eliminate laws they did not support.
