The Southern states believed that Lincoln was against slavery and they also thought that he would favor with the Northern states. Cardoza and Hume state that Lincoln was trying to contain slavery only in the states that were slave states but he knew that the whole nation had to be for slavery completely or against slavery completely (197). Before Lincoln was even president the first state to secede was South Carolina possibly because it was one of the states that participated the most in slavery (198). After South Carolina seceded Mississippi, Florida, Texas, Alabama, Georgia, and Louisiana followed. There were too many differences between the states including the expansion of slavery and being able to have state rights. The tension between the Union and the Confederates had been building up so much that it was inevitable. As weird as it might sound, I am happy that the Civil War happened because it, along with other events, helped defined what our country is today. In conclusion, without this war the Southern states possibly would not be a part of our country and it would maybe have taken longer to abolish slavery and stop it from spreading to the Western
