After watching a Ted Talk that personally told the stories of modern day slaves, my heart was broken. These people are stripped of all their rights and freedom in order to work themselves to death. Whether it be poisoning by mercury digging for gold, or being trapped in a mine three hundred feet in the ground these men, women and children are desperate for change. The thematic maps created by Max Fisher illustrates the percentage of the population all around the world that are enslaved, along with the amount of slaves held in each country. Slavery has been an ever changing concept, and modern day slavery has simply morphed into what is now called human trafficking. Throughout history, slavery has taken on different characteristics in each culture, religion, and time period from The Hammurabi Code up to the American Civil War and the eventual illegalization of the practice. There is evidence of slavery before recorded history; however, the first written account of slavery is in The Hammurabi Code (the first written law).…

Slavery as many Americans remember it began in the United States hundreds of years ago. The fact is that slavery took place thousands of years prior. Throughout the years slavery has impacted society in a big way. “My understanding is that slavery is an extreme form of a universal human tendency for some members of society to exercise domination over others.
