The living conditions were juristically that bad, mentally and physically. Slaves lives were viewed as irrelevant and they were thought of and treated like objects. Some slaves were not given enough food or clothing, they had no bed to sleep in or they were in the process of being separated from their families. Some families attempted to escape together in order to not be sold separately. In the efforts of running away they saw the opportunity to get an education, make their own money and be free. Mainly they strove to live a normal life that everyone human deserved to live, disregarding the color of their skin. It was apparent how bad they wanted freedom because of the consequences they knew they would suffer if they were to be caught. Punishment would range from being resold and being sent to work even further South where life was much harder, being beaten unconscious or possibly to death, heavy fines and even jail time. If they were caught, they would be watched much closer and be given more laborious work then they were given before. These were punishments given to demotivate slaves from trying to escape again. These punishments didn’t have these effects because all humans crave freedom. It only made their will that much stronger and also they knew what mistakes to avoid the
