Slavery In North Korea Essay

Most people do not realize that slavery still happens today. When most people think of slavery they think of things like chains and whippings and people being stolen from their homes in Africa to be shipped in slave ships to be sold to work in cotton and tobacco fields. Modern slavery isn’t quite like that, but it is still slavery. People are forced to work in horrible conditions for only a fraction of the pay that they rightfully earned and someone else profits from their labor. Modern slavery happens all around the world.
One example of the modern slave trade is the arrangement in North Korea. Basically, the conditions are so terrible in North Korea that the people willingly go to other countries like Russia as a cheap labor force. Sometimes they even bribe the North Korean state to be sent to other countries to work just to leave the extreme poverty of their own country behind. And then there are countries like the North African country of Mauritania that has tried three times to abolish slavery within its borders. Because of the greed of others, all three times it has failed. The government refuses to identify that there is actually slavery in their country, yet they are also passing laws to make it illegal to own slaves or promote slavery and roughly twenty percent of its population are slaves. So now they are trying to pass laws to improve living and working conditions for “domestic laborers”. Often these countries blame slavery on the slaves themselves, claiming that slavery perpetuates itself because the men, women, and children are desperate enough to accept the degradation and the desperation just goes on generation after generation.
