There were several ways you could become a slave in Rome. Some became slaves because they could not pay back the money they had borrowed. The government would also take people into slavery if they could not pay their taxes. There were also many cases of poor people selling their children as slaves to richer neighbors.” The slaves in ancient Rome grew far and wide. In the ancient time the color of slaves or rich people wasn’t an issue. It was how poor or rich you are. They would send slaves back and forth and trade them off for goods. When they would go abroad on ships the slaves would die from lack of hygiene and lack of nutrition. When the slaves were traded off they were mostly naked, and they often had to explain their best and worst qualities, so they could be bought by slave masters. Some slaves also went into the army since the couldn’t fend for themselves when it came to taking care of yourself. Other slaves would work around the house because of their health or their condition. The girls that were young and beautiful would be brought for much more only because of their looks, (because who would want an ugly slave), the skilled workers would be less than a beautiful young girl. Young boys would also be worth much more than the young girls or the skilled workers, because they can accomplish more than a girl could or an older slave worker. “Rich families would also use slaves as bodyguards, cooks, waiters, doormen, cleaners, gardeners, hairdressers, dressmakers and maids. Rich Romans were usually large landowners, so they also had slaves working on their farms. It was common practice to have them in work-teams of ten slaves. Branded on the forehead, chained the women slaves usually did the housekeeping. They would do it in favor for the women masters, together and guarded by a foreman carrying a whip, there was little chance of escape”. Some slaves had gotten away with running away from
