1. The Colony of Massachusetts believes that citizens qualified to vote in elections for the state legislatures should elect members of the lower house. We believe that this proposition is the correct decision because it upholds what we fought for in the Revolutionary War. In The Declaration of Independence, created by our founding father, it states that all men are created equal. Therefore, all men should be involved in the government and have a say in those who represent them. The proposition that we choose is most significant to the ideas that our founding fathers had when creating this country. As Wilson from Pennsylvania once said “No government can long subsist without the confidence of the people.” He is saying that the people …show more content…
The Colony of Massachusetts believes that the slave trade should be abolished throughout this great nation. Taking people from their homes and all that they know to work in an unfamiliar land until they die is inhumane. As Morris from Pennsylvania said “slavery is the curse of heaven on the state where it prevails.” Many think that the national government should not interfere with the slave trade and it should be left up to the states. This is wrong because we are the United States of America, a united nation that should be united on this issue. Slavery is fiendish and goes against the laws of humanity. As displayed throughout our country, the middle and northern states, where slavery is abolished, is a civilized society where prosperity and happiness exist. While in the southern states where slavery is at its highest, miserable and poverty prevail. The unalienable rights, as outlined in The Declaration, should not be taken away from any man, therefore slavery should be …show more content…
We, the Colony of Massachusetts believe that all states under the Articles should be represented the national legislature. Smaller states such as our colony need to have a say in national issues through the national legislature. This poses as an equality for all states that there is an equal share of say especially for the smaller states such as Massachusetts. Even though this equal representation will give the general government more power, it will be good for the whole of the colonies. A great point is made by a man named Bedford of Delaware who says, “If you posses the power, the abuse of it could not be checked; and what then would prevent you from exercising it to our destruction?” This quote is excellent because it shows that if each state was not represented in the national legislature then the government would be given too much power and no one would be able to stop it if there was evil being done. This shows that there needs to be more than one state making the decisions so that one legislature would speak for the states without representation throughout. However, if there was representation of the states in the national legislature then the government would stay in check and as minimal harm as possible would be

The Emancipation Proclamation, issued by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863, declared “that all persons held as slaves” within the rebel states “are, and henceforward shall be free.” This proclamation was an important step towards abolishing slavery and conferring American citizenship upon ex-slaves, although the proclamation did not actually outlaw slavery or free the slaves in the Union states that still permitted it (“The Immediate Effects”). The proclamation also broadened the goals of the Union war effort, because it made the abolition of slavery into an explicit Union goal, in addition to the reuniting of the country. As a matter of fact, not only did the Emancipation Proclamation proclaim the freedom of slaves in the ten Confederate states still in rebellion, but it also ordered that freed slaves could be enlisted in the Union Army, thereby increasing the Union’s…

American colonists argued that they were part of an increasingly corrupt and autocratic empire in which their traditional liberties were threatened. The American Revolution was precipitated, in part, by a series of laws passed between 1763 and 1775 that regulated trade and taxes. This legislation caused tensions between colonists and imperial officials, who made it clear that the British Parliament would not address American complaints that the new laws were onerous. During the second half of the eighteenth century, tension arose between the British government and its transatlantic colonies. To maintain the peace of 1763, the British government stationed troops on the frontiers of the colonies.…

Question 2: What accounts for the growth and power of the lower house of the assembly as one of the most powerful institutions in America? Governors, though displeased, were dependent on the colonial assembly due to the control of their salaries, weakening “thier positions” (pg. 71). The governors were touchy with the colonists and avoided angering them to make sure their paycheck was still in their pockets every payday. Since the colonist had so much control, “colonial assemblies came to act like and think of themselves as mini-parliaments, with full legislative power over local matters” (pg. 71).…

As the Americans were creating their new government, they kept the features of the government they did not want in mind. They wanted to ensure that their government was very different from the monarchy that Britain had by trying to make a central government where its powers were not necessarily weak, but where the power rested in the people. Another feature that the Americans did not want in their new government was unequal representation. They despised the lack of representation they had in Parliament, and as they created their new government they ensured that every state was represented equally so the concerns of the people could be properly addressed. Because of this, the American public was adamant that the new government’s powers were…

John Winthrop claims the leading principle of the revolution is the idea that one legislature cannot represent the different ideas of a nation for the purpose of the government and the economy. He feels a bill of rights is to be implanted in order to protect the rights of the states and its citizens. Winthrop argues that for “the happiness of the people it is necessary that there should be local laws” and that those laws “should be made by the representatives of those who are immediately subject to the want of them” (Winthrop, 1787). Through this idea, Winthrop introduces a solution to problem of a legislature for all the states. He states that the only way for a nation to function, if to grant the states and its citizens the power to establish…

Those who were slaves and witnessed or experienced the actuality of the situation were able to uphold the wrong that was conducted through slaveries existence, which ultimately aided their racial freedom. The enslavement of African Americans was looked upon through multiple angles and those who attempted to perceive it as a benefit found reasons to justify it, such as Richard Furman and George Fitzhugh. However, through their justification the masking of reality was unobjectionable, as the actuality of the slave situation was described through the harsh experiences…
