How was it to be a slave back then in the United States? How did they live? Well it is obvious that slaves in the United States had a rough time. In Frederick Douglass’s autobiography, he describes how it was to be a slave in the United States by sharing his experiences and incorporate them into how slaves were.
Let’s begin of how they lived. Slaves got a monthly allowance of and yearly clothing. Since slaves were given a certain amount of food, they had to ration it between each other, so no one would more than the rest. As for their monthly allowance of food, they got eight pounds of pork or the equal amount in fish, and one bucket of corn. For their clothing, the adult slaves were only given the yearly clothing. But in this case, they would be ranked at a valuation to be distributed between the slave owner’s children. The slaves were treated like livestock. They were mixed with horses, sheep, and pigs. For the slave owners, the slaves weren’t people, they were animals bound to do whatever the owner pleases. After everything was evaluated, then came the division over the property. The slaves had no vote or word in the matter. They were separated into groups for their new slave owners, hoping their new owner will treat them kindly.
The slave holders or overseers would use the slave’s fear of punishment. Some slave owners were extremely brutal. Any excuse would make them want to whip the slave. I believe that they took all their frustrations on the

In Stampps ¨A Troublesome Property¨, Stampp explains tactics slaves used in order to gain freedom, even if it was the smallest taste of freedom such as faking an illness or injury, damaging property and to run away. “Slave resistance, whether bold and persistent or mild and sporadic created for all slaveholders a serious problem of discipline.” (Stampp 260). Some example of slave resistance involved only working when an overseer was present. An account from a Virginia planter said ¨ I left the field at 12 with all going on well, but very little done after that.¨ (Stampp 262).…

Slavery was one of the darkest clouds in American history! It makes me cringe every time I think about what African-Americans had to go through during that time. Not only were the slaves themselves dehumanized but the owners themselves did not act normal because of all the power they had. Slavery is something America will never be able to wash their hands of, but it gave us some of the bravest Americans you 'll ever meet in Frederick Douglas, Sojourner Truth and Harriet Tubman.…

Slaves were considered to be the whites’ property; therefore, they were to be punished like an animal not a human being. To continue, if a slave left the property without a certificate of permission it was law that they had to be given 20 lashes by the police. Slaves simply did not have the right to leave property as they pleased because their master’s owned them and they told them where and when to go places. Severe punishments led to both parties, black and whites, being afraid to break any…

These punishments are shown in Nightjohn when slaves are whipped when their actions do not please their master- Old Waller- or attempt to run away. According to an interview with Mingo White - a former slave-, he states, “I went to the field… and picked cotton with the rest of the hands. I kept up too, to keep from getting any lashes…” This rather relates to Mammy when she is whipped by Old Waller, when she refuses to reveal to him who has been teaching Sarny to read. This also relates to Nightjohn, when he arrives at the plantation with scars of the lashes he endured.…

These were the main tasks show in “12 years a slave”, for some the tasks would be cleaning or acting as a driver making sure the other slaves stayed in line and completed their tasks. “The precise organization of their labor varied according to the crop and the size if the holding” (Foner, 324). In Solomon’s case, he did all of these tasks and rotated them by season. During the season of cotton picking, a slaves day was of course from sun up to sunrise. “There are few sights more pleasant to the eye, than a wide cotton field when it is in the bloom.…

Frederick Douglass argues in his narrative that slavery dehumanizes both the slave and the slave master generating a dependency for each other. For slave’s, this dehumanization came in the form of having their name, culture and personal identity stripped away from them and for the slave master, the inability to function when deprived of slave assistance. In this essay, I will use Frederick Douglass’s narrative; along with, first-hand accounts to demonstrate how both the slave and the slave master became dehumanized through the institution of slavery. Using Frederick Douglass’s narrative, I will explain how slaves became exploited for cheap labor by the slave master creating a society depended on slaves.…
