Slavery was no stranger to the United States since the founding of Jamestown back in 1607. Slaves underwent guttural treatment such as being separated from their families, being beaten when they did their job poorly, and not getting paid for long hours of work. The horror many slaves faced made them want improvement. In contrast to the South, the North believed slaves had the right to be free but the South opposed. Slavery was a controversial issue that had to be addressed by the government. According to the Wilmot Proviso, there should not be any slavery in new territory acquired from the Mexican American war, but it was later removed in 1846. This was a let down for northerners because they believed the law would help slavery come to an end but it didn’t. Controversy grew when the states and the national government could not come to a consensus of which new states should have slavery. One of the ways people believed it should be decided was by popular sovereignty. The citizens demanded to have a voice on what believed was right and wanted to make the decision themselves. A long awaited solution surfaced once the Compromise of 1850 was introduced. It stated that California would be free state while Utah and New Mexico would decide if they wanted to be a slave or free state.
