Slaveholders denied Africans their basic human rights because they wanted free labor. Slaves were important for the southerners, they believed that the fastest way to run their plantations was free labor.
In document 1, we find out that Slaves were denied their basic human rights. This statement is true and will be proven in this paragraphs. The African slaves could get mistreated, beaten, starved, abused, sold to others, and it is totally legal at the time, to even kill the slave. All of these things are legal in America. Near the time 1800’s the southerners believed that slaves would benefit the economy and it was the only way to grow America. If a slave talked back or raised his hand back at the slave owner, the slave could get beaten to a point were the slave wouldn't be able to walk. This is all legal in the system, the slavery system. The property, corn, and Africans are being sold at an auction. An auction is where people come to bid for property crops, and slaves. This is proof that Americans believe that African Slaves are just property, or free labor, they don’t realize that they are whipping, starving, torturing real human beings. Slaves were known as property for a great amount of time to Americans. To make slaves work faster, the slaveholders would put torture masks and different equipment that were
