Slave Traditions In Different Religions

Decent Essays
Slave Services typically began with European hymns and long prayers. Preachers gave sermons. The services mixed African rhythms, singing, and beliefs with evangelical Christianity. In the spirituals they sang, there were double meanings of religious salvation and freedom from slavery. During the service the emotional fervor gradually mounted and ended in ritual spirit possession. One of their rituals that lasted over a period of several weeks was “mourning”, a ritual that symbolized death and rebirth and involved fasting, lying on a dirt floor, and other physical deprivations.[7] Through out history many different religions have been made and some changed but even though they are all different they were also very similar in ways.

The world wouldn't be the way it is today if it wasn't for slavery. African slavery was an outstanding quality to the British empire because slavery shaped the new world of Americas. Initially, when the British defeated the peoples of Eastern North America (Indians), they had destroyed many Native Indians and caused an outbreak of diseases. Those natives who survived through the conquest of guns and diseases declined to work with the defeaters or on the plantations they produced. This led the natives to run away for freedom or submitting themselves to new diseases so that they wouldn't have to work as prisoners.…

History has been written through the lenses of powerful white men. In most accounts the information gained and written is from a biased outlook with a great deal of speculation, and often altered from its true form. As author Kelly states in his book Race Rebels, too many scholars distort and omit the private side of African Americans’ social and cultural history (Kelly). Westerners had a common notion that Africans who were enslaved lost all their cultural ties and tradition due to the traumatic experiences during the transatlantic voyage; this idea was coined by Robert Park and is called tabula rasa. It is considers a “blank slate” a loss of heritage, culture and beliefs for the slaves.…

The Bible contains passages advising slaves to “obey” and “submit” to their masters and dealing with poor treatment of slaves: “And that servant who knew his master 's will but did not get ready or act according to his will, will receive a severe beating” (Luke 12:47). Although religion is often thought to make people more kind, the opposite was often the case with the religion of the Southern slaveholders. Indeed, Frederick Douglass, a former slave, found that religious masters were often the cruelest. “I assert most unhesitatingly, that the religion of the south is a mere covering for the most horrid crimes…Were I to be again reduced to the chains of slavery, next to that enslavement, I should regard being the slave of a religious master the greatest calamity to befall me” (Douglass…
