Slaughterhouse Five Themes

Throughout a life full of flashbacks and conflicts, a person would imagine being confused in several different ways. In the novel Slaughterhouse- Five by Kurt Vonnegut, Billy Pilgrim has been through a life that no other human can imagine. With several themes built into this novel, Billy shows his growth within himself as a character. As Billy flashes back and forth from being in the army in Dresden, being captured on the planet of Tralfamadore, and his relationship with his fiancé, Billy gives an idea about his post-traumatic disorder. While working in Dresden, Billy begins his journey at a not so very serious approach. Billy takes the army as something that seems not real to him. Billy hated his soon to be wife Valincia that he said, “I do not want to marry ugly Valencia” (107). Billy has one intention to marry Valencia. He wants her father's money so he can finally be put into a rich household. Billy shows a characteristic of not caring and selfish. He shows a lack the trait, caring to Valencia. Billy does not want to marry her because of love only for the money and amazing future with that money that he will be spoiled with. Billy grows more kind hearted to his soon to be wife by finally seeing that she cares dearly about him and would do anything for him. Valencia sat at the side of his bed when he was at the hospital. He now grew kind and sees that he needs to show love and support. One quote that stood out was, “They do not love one another because they do not love themselves” (180). This statement is very accurate about Billy and Valencia's relationship. Billy has yet to love himself and accept to himself that he has a disorder that can not be helped. After he has loved himself, and accepted people around him, he then shows attention to Valencia.
