Slammed By Colleen Hoover: Novel Analysis

Throughout the novel “Slammed” by Colleen Hoover, Layken is forced to move from her beloved home in Texas to a new, unfamiliar city in Michigan. She hated Ysilanti, Michigan. “Lake, stop being such a downer...I think you’ll love Michigan” (Hoover 3). This quote is one that I can relate to very well. It is almost exactly what my mother said to me when I was moving from California to where I live now, Windsor, Ontario. I was seven years old and resentful of the move we were about to make but of course, just like Layken, my brother was happier than ever. I was obviously much younger than Layken when we made this big move so it was much easier for me to not only accept but love where I have built my true “home.” However, it was not until I read …show more content…
Living in Michigan became much less detrimental as the novel advanced. One of the biggest life lessons that Layken gained during the novel was to “Push your boundaries, that's what they're there for” (168). Personally, I have taken that lesson that Layken derived all her actions from and applied it to my own life. I learned that stepping out of your comfort zone allowed you to make new discoveries. It opens your eyes to what is around you and you learn to love the new things that you’ve recently become aware of. At this point in the novel, when her mother gave her the advice, I started to make prediction that there was a soon-to-happen turning point in Layken’s life. My predictions were confirmed after Layken and her mother, Julia told Kel about Julia’s cancer. He said, “’But I wanna stay here, by Caulder, he says as he lifts his head from her shirt and looks at me. “Layken, are you gonna make me move back to texas with you?’” (249). Layken had every intention of moving back to Texas prior to Kel saying that however, as soon as she heard that he wanted to stay next to someone he loved she realized that home was not where you were born or where a building was set up with a bed for you to sleep

In the short story, “From B’wood to the Hood” the author Ryan Smith talks about the struggle of moving from one side of town to the other side. The first thing that stuck out to me in the story was when the author says, “I broke the news to my mother that I was moving from Brentwood to the hood”. This reminds me of when I recently decided to tell my mom that I was moving to Denver, Colorado from Lancaster, PA. Although she did take the news better than I thought, she still tried to talk me out of moving. She eventually started to support me with my new endeavor in life and she wound up driving out to Colorado with me the last week of July. Another thing that popped out at me while reading was “my father separated from my mom”.…

For the first two years of my life I lived in Lima, Peru and even though I never culturally adapted myself into the culture I would often visit for months and immerse myself into the culture. I can say with confidence that if I grew up in that culture I would not my be the same person I am today because of the fact that they are a collectivistic country and that would change my outlook on myself and the community around me. At around my second birthday my family and I decided to move to the United States in search of a better quality of life. I was born in Detroit and moved away before I had my brain was able to create memories. The only part of Detroit I knew was downtown. I consider my hometown to be Grand Forks, North Dakota. I was born at the former United Hospital in Grand Forks in 1994, and have lived here for my entire life—with the exception of about a year spent in Walhalla, North Dakota, due to the flood of 1997. The schools that I attended while growing up are all within fifteen minutes of driving from my current house. My parents live just 6.2 miles away from me. Although Grand Forks is my city of birth, it wasn’t until I started college that I really considered it my hometown.…

In the book “The Other Wes Moore”, the four main concepts that can affect an individual’s life path is environment, personal responsibility, influence, and expectations. Environment and influences are related to each other because different environments have positive and negative influences within them. Personal responsibilities can vary greatly from person to person; some learn responsibility at a young age by doing chores or younger siblings while others never learn to take responsibilities for themselves or their actions. Then, expectations can be what individuals expect from themselves or what others around them expect them to do. However, I believe the four main concepts that shape a person’s direction of life are common sense, new environments,…
