Slam Poetry Poem Analysis

Improved Essays
To many, the words “Individual” and “Community” seem to oppose each other. However, the word individual is derived from the Latin root individuum meaning “an atom, indivisible particle” which shows how a true community is able to function — as one.

Slam Poetry, Flag Football, and Experiential Learning all represent a personal connection between an individual and their community.

When a slam poet takes the stage, whether it be in front of a thousand people or in front of one person, and clutches a microphone they become the voice of a community. This past year, slam poet, Rachel McKibbens, performed at my school. One main truth I learned through connecting with her was that Slam Poetry connects your voice and your experience to a community

“Ask Me” by William Stafford is a contemporary poem that compares the author’s life to a river. The reader is instilled with a strong sense of nostalgia, placidity, and introspection as Stafford reflects on his past and the meaning of his actions and life. The theme of this piece is life and its relative pace, similar to a river which is used as an ongoing metaphor Stafford introduces himself early on because this work is a conversation between the author and the reader. In the first stanza, Stafford repeatedly implores the reader to “ask me” (1, 2, 6) about his past and his thoughts. This repetition causes a slight uneasiness in the reader as Stafford is insisting the reader to participate.…

After listening to Serial, a podcast based on the awaiting trial of a high school star Adnan, I believe that he is guilty of killing his, at the time, girlfriend Haemin Lee. First of all, Adnan doesn’t anything specific from that afternoon. If anyone got a call from the police saying that your friend is missing, you would definitely remember every detail of what happened that day because it is not something that you can just forget. Just to add to that, if your friend is still missing the next day, you would go over all of the specifics with the people that youre both friends with to try and put together every piece of the story. So to me, that makes absolutely no sense.…

There are in total two poems in Slant Six I used as models to write this poem. The first one is “Someone asks, what makes this poem American?’ and it inspires me to find connections among daily things. Specifically, Erin draws the conclusion that “American is anywhere” at the first time by discussing about where the “normal” American food comes from and different customs behind these American food and how American society contributes to the combination of different cultures. Once Erin draw the conclusion that Americanness is everywhere, she works on verifying her conclusion by both describing a normal American mini-marts, Bill’s, and using examples to convince people have opposite ideas.…

In this poem I use the strategy Internal Rhyme, each verse has 8 syllables and the whole poem has 8 lines. This poem symbolises about how some people just wander aimlessly through life not knowing what will happen next; will they be a saint, or will the lead a life of crime? I've used this formatting to show how formal some people may appear to be, which is the left side of the poem, which uses only one font. The right side represents the crumbling happiness of said person. These fonts were chosen to show the many moods they can go through, with a mind of a day to day basis.…

“Isolation is the worst possible counselor”(Unamuno). Emily Dickinson describes in her narrative poem,”From Blank to Blank,” a tormented person with loneliness and confinement, no matter what the narrator does to try to avoid it. The speaker admits defeat when she finds no way out of the darkness, because whatever she does makes no difference. Emily Dickinson’s use of meter, metaphors, and dashes in her poetry execute the purpose and theme of this poem.…

“The Laramie Project” as Community Based Art Is the “Laramie Project” community based art(CBA)? Well, on the surface, the “Laramie Project,” a play that consists of dialogue taken directly from community interview, seems like CBA: it contains community and art elements. However, if we truly ponder whether or not the “Laramie Project” ought be defined as community based art, a further question emerges: what makes some artistic piece one that is CBA? And does the “Laramie Project” fit this mold? This paper serves to show that the “Laramie Project” is, in fact, community based art; further, this paper serves to clarify for the fear of potential confusion on future literature “the Laramie Project”: one cannot rightly judge or understand a piece…

Most of today’s society has had an experience like the character in Carolyn Kizer’s poem “Bitch”, by meeting an ex-significant lover/partner when visiting a local place. The awkward first moment while making eye contact with one another just like a past experience, often creates a challenge about the appropriate way to act. Especially, if the past experiences was not pleasant and/or was full of male dominance. Carolyn Kizer shows this in her poem through the theme, which is, you should never chase after something that was never really yours to begin with and is more harmful than rewarding. Beginning with the title, “Bitch”, most readers will associate this word to have two possible meanings.…

“Blank Space” written by singer/songwriter Taylor Swift was a huge success in 2014. The song brought already famous Taylor Swift more praise as it topped the charts and helped her become the first woman to top herself at the number one spot on the “Hot 100” (Trust). The song is written with a depth of heartbreak, attitude, mischief, and hope. Although sultry, and alluring at first listen, the song is about a woman who has been hurt many times in the past and is seeking someone to fill the void in her life.…

A Critical Analysis of Richard Siken’s Crush Crush by Richard Siken is a phenomenal collection of poems that uses confessionalism to explore the speaker 's experiences with love and homosexuality. Siken uses strong imagery and diction to discuss the themes of abuse, love, and violence throughout the collection. For this essay I chose to analyze two of Siken’s poems “ A Primer for the Small Weird Loves” and “The torn-up road” . In both poems Siken is able to convey very powerful messages, and he uses his poetic ability to transform so much violence and abuse into beautiful art in the form of poetry. “ A Primer for the Small Weird Loves” epitomizes the struggle of a coming of age gay man/boy.…
