The novel “Slade House” tells the tale of a strange house and the disappearances that seem to revolve around the house. The readers are able to join the journey with the characters as they learn what it really means to be human. As a result, the main theme of the book is, arguably, the fact that our grief and vulnerability is what makes us human. The theme is influenced by the characters, setting, and the overall plot.
The most notable influencer of the theme is the Grayer twins and their powers. Since Jonah and his sister have the power to stay alive for an inhumane amount of time, one might see them as not even being human. Even Norah says “it’s people and not gods” (page 210) who made everything the visual representation of the Slade House. When she says this it reminds the reader that the Twins are human despite the fact that their humanity seems to be erased due to their powers. Being most influenced by the characters, seeing as the point of view allows the reader to see into the minds of each character. Therefore we can piece together the bigger picture on our own.
