Skin Coloration Theory

Improved Essays
Skin colour is determined by alleles that control the production of colouring pigments namely pheomelanin and eumelanin. Therefore skin coloration is a hereditary trait rather than dependent on the area where you live. Light skinned people produce mostly pheomelanin and darker skinned people produce eumelanin. The sizes of melanin particles differ among individuals and the number and size of these particles are what ultimately determines skin colour. More than 6 different genes code for this trait which is why skin tone varies from light to dark amongst offspring. This is what many scientists have concluded is the deciding factor of skin coloration and yes there is merit in this theory however this analysis will suggest that skin colour is …show more content…
But however according to Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution this is actually possible. The theory claims that if there are a mixture of certain traits in an area, the individuals that have the trait that is better suited for the environment will increase as those with less suitable traits will die out. It suggests that if in a certain area, for example a tropical region where the temperatures are high, there was a mixture of light and dark people. The darker would be more suitable to survive because the dark pigment will protect them from the UV radiation and just enough will penetrate for the production of vitamin D. however lighter skinned people would be more prone dangerous mutations and skin cancer because they would have little protection against the amount of radiation entering their skin. This would make lighter skinned people weaker and cause them to die out leaving darker skinned individuals in that area and vice versa darker skinned people would not be suited to survive in lower temperatures causing them to die out and leave lighter skinned people in that area. Natural selection would therefore cause these traits to be passed down from generation to generation. This theory suggests that the hypothesis is valid and that skin coloration is indeed affected by sunlight

So, this gives females extra protection against malaria, while they also won’t have a dangerous reaction to fava beans. b. People of Mediterranean descent would be healthiest in comparison to those of African descent.…
