Skin cancer is caused by damage to DNA. DNA gets damaged by ultraviolet rays, the sun. Skin cancer forms when cells divide quickly and unevenly. Skin cancer risks get higher when you have exposure to ultraviolet rays. There are 3 types of cancer: Basal Cell Carcinoma which is the most common type of skin cancer, it is the least harmful of the three. Squamous Cell Carcinoma is a more serious cancer than Basal Cell Carcinoma, this types of cancer can grow and spread all over the body. Malignant Melanoma is the most serious form of skin cancer. Fair and light skinned people are more susceptible to this cancer because they burn easier. Also infrequent sun exposure that leads to a burn put you at higher risk for this skin cancer also. The first treatment option for squamous cell carcinoma that is detected early on is a simple removal of the cancer and it’s usually always curable. If however it is left undetected it can metastasize and become fatal. Typical removal is not painful and can be done as an outpatient treatment. Another treatment option is Moh’s micrographic surgery which is done with a small scalpel. They take out the tumor and check the skin with a microscope to make sure the surrounding tissue is healthy.
