Prevention isn’t a new topic of discussion. It has been around for decades, yet only recently have organizations pushed to help and inform the public of the prevention of skin cancer. These organizations are not only educating the general public, but they have even targeted certain demographics to research how the sun affects everyone. Each year there are more cases of skin cancer than breast, prostate, lung and colon cancer combined. Even though skin cancer impacts the lives of millions and is extremely preventable, people just aren’t doing enough to keep themselves safe.

One of these methods is following the 5 S’s: Slip on a shirt, slop on sunscreen, slap on a hat, seek out shade, and slide on some sunglasses. Another good method to prevent yourself from contracting skin cancer is by finding clothing to protect yourself from UV rays. The best type of clothing to wear are shirts that are tightly woven because it is harder for the sun’s rays to penetrate it. A good way to test which shirts are best to use is to hold the shirt up to the light. If you can see the light, then the UV rays can penetrate it easier. Although the first layer of defense against the sun’s rays is clothing, it will not always protect you from the damage the sun can cause. This is why applying sunscreen can be very important and play a major role in your protection against skin cancer. The next S, slopping on some sunscreen, is extremely important in preventing skin cancer. The skin cancer foundation states that “Anyone over the age of six months should use a sunscreen daily.” So sunscreen is extremely important, but which one should I pick? Well, there are many factors in picking your sunscreen to be most effective in fighting skin cancer. As reported by the American Academy of Dermatology, you should choose a sunscreen with at least 30 SPF (sun protective factor). Judy was a weather forecaster in Illinois and accounts time of her and her friends going to by lake Michigan using baby oil to suntan. Even though Judy has light skin she never believed that she could get skin cancer. When questioned about her use and knowledge of sunscreen she states that, “We didn 't even think about it; most of us didn 't even know about it.
