Whether I was being read to as a bedtime story or just for entertainment, I always enjoyed all of the different stories and characters. Surprisingly, I did enjoy reading Life of Pi because I thought it was a good story and very thought provoking. Since I was reading most of these novels against my will, I found myself skimming through the pages to look for answers and never actually reading anything. I was never taught any text apprehension strategies so skimming was not always

It was not that I was incapable of reading, in fact I always scored exceptionally well on all reading segments of standardized tests, I just really did not see a requirement for it. Even though I have not finished reading “The Federalist Paper,” I still learn a lot about the foundation of American government and also about myself as a learner during the process. I know that I am more of a visual learner than an auditory learner, but I usually get bored really quickly whenever I read a long text that is full of information or does not have any pictures or graphs. So instead of reading “The Federalist Paper” in one go, I break it down into sections and then use a highlighter to highlight important facts and take notes as I go. These learning tips are not new, but I always find them helpful when I need to analyze the text later on. I also tend to get lost a lot when I read and end up skimming and skipping throughout the text.…

In the quote by Christopher Columbus he states “By prevailing over all obstacles and distractions, one may unfailingly arrive at his chosen goal or destination” I thought this quote pertained to me because I know this year there are going to be many obstacles in English class, but if I just push myself I know I can reach my goal. As a reader and writer, I believe that I have grown stronger over the years. In the past, I did not like reading at all I would try to get by with reading as little of the stories as possible in order to pass. I felt this way until this summer when I started to read the books for English.…

Whether it be a Goosebumps books or Mark Twain books you 'll go anywhere it leads you, but once I got into middle school and high school the books weren 't like that anymore. School books do have plenty of information in them, but they’re uninteresting to read. Not too many people want to get lost in a book about photosynthesis, they would much rather read a story about action and adventure. I do feel like reading the informational books for studies and homework did help when I would read them to finish my school work, but thats only if I could make myself read through them. Usually I would just skim through the book rather than read it word for word to get the main idea.…

Growing up, I learned that reading was pleasurable and entertaining. Because my parents and grandparents always had bookshelves full of interesting books to entertain myself with, I never had a reason to become bored. As I laid in bed with my mother, I asked her, “Will you come read with me tonight?” Reading from Mother Goose Nursery Rhymes entertained me the most. Although I memorized each of the simple rhymes, I always asked mother to read them over and over again.…

I couldn 't find a way to make myself interested in the things I was reading. Every year there was a new summer reading assignment and every year I didn’t read it. I would try to but along the way I would end up opening Sparknotes and reading the summaries of each book instead. At times I felt bad because I knew that I should be taking advantage of the access I had to those books, but they bored me. I longed to be able to dive into books and absorb everything in them, but I couldn’t get more than my toe in the water.…

When I was young I was never the best at reading even though my parents owned many books and magazines that they read on a daily basis. My mother enjoyed reading her gossip magazines that she would receive in the mail once a month and my father had a whole bookshelf full of history books. My parents would always encourage me to read the books I would check out at the school library to improve my reading and writing but that advice usually went in through one ear and out the other. The only books I would really attempt to read had to be humorous or horrifying, my favorites were the Goosebumps collection. I loved reading these books alone in my room where I couldn’t be sidetracked by all the commotion that went on in my house.…
