It was a warm sunny day in late December, I ran and leapt on. I immediately fell and landed straight on my back. The board went flying down the shore without me. I still couldn’t figure out how to ride on the board. Did I need to distribute my weight better?
Last December, when my family was in the Ron Jon surf shop, in Cocoa Beach, Florida, we noticed a strange blue board. It was like a surfboard, only it was much smaller and was a bit broader. When I asked my Mom what it was, she explained that was a skim board and that she saw some people using it down on the shore. She said the difference between surfing and skim boarding was that one was done out in the ocean and the other was done on the coast as the waves crashed in. I thought how cool it would be if I could feel like I was riding the wave on the

Our hotel was right on the beach and we only had to walk a few hundred feet to the shore. When we got to the beach my brother tried first. We looked up on Youtube how to ride a skim board on the day before. It showed that you start striding in the water near the shore where it is only a few inches deep. Then you reach down and slide the board on the water, and then you jump on and revel in the ride. My brother did not do this. He threw the board down and jumped on, and he completely blundered and fell straight on his back. Next was my turn. I took a deep breath and smelled the salt in the air. I ran and slid the panel on the shore and did the same exact thing. Only the board traveled much further down the shore without me on it. After I got up with a mouth full of salt and sand, we continued doing this for awhile each time getting a little bit better. We were able to not fall off completely, we just slid off after we jumped on. It was very slippery, almost like jumping on a bar of soap. After about an hour, we decided to call it for the day and headed back to the hotel

Managing to break free from the first set of waves, I pushed forth into the next set of unceasing five foot waves. With legs bent upwards and arms plunging one after the other in a Michael Phelps mentality to finish the race with swift strokes, I kept my body centered in the middle of my seven foot board just like my grandpa positioned me to do so. With a split second to pause and raise my head to look over an oncoming wave, I made out the face of my grandpa, looking back at me from his own board and grinning at the look of my determined face to get out into the line-up. Eminent to the gray-haired “townies” who create their own spindrift from whipping the tail of their boards high in the air, is a homely beach, Rockpiles.…

I remember my uncle taking my cousins and I to Duns River Falls in Jamaica. At the bottom of the falls he took me from the shallow ends to the deep end, a good area where my head remained above the water if I stood on my tippy toes. My uncle laid his arms underneath me and taught me to relax and float. From time to time he would slowly remove his arms, allowing me to float without his support. I would freak out when I realized that his arms where no longer there holding me.…

Once passed the net, there was a very short ladder wall climb and it was now time for the last obstacle of the course, the “Accelerator” which is a massive water ramp slide down in to a few feet deep pool of water. I asked the volunteer if I could slide head first on my stomach and he said yes, so that is what I did both days. The funny part is the same kid was at this obstacle both days and he was shocked to see me back on Sunday and ready to go head first again. This was a very fun obstacle and I am sure it’s a challenge for anyone that has a fear of heights.…
