A teacher takes all of the letters and places them in a bowl and mixes them with the students help. After this is completed each student takes a turn picking out a letter. Once the student picks their letter, they have to say what it is by sounding it out phonetically. This process continues until all of the letters have been chosen and each student correctly identifies it. To play, you give each student a can of Alphabet Soup and have them identify the letter on the can. After each student identifies the letter on their can they empty it into the mixing bowl and then help you stir and mix up the soup. By asking children to identify red food on their plate or asking what color the peas are will help them by associating items to colors and shapes. Eating is something that is done several times daily and by taking a moment at each meal or snack to notice colors will make your child more aware and interested in colors. If a child is having trouble learning a particular color, try creating a day in honor of the color for the entire family. Everyone can wear the color of the day, add the color of the day to meals and snacks and point out the color (Preschool Practices, 2014).
A singing game to do with children, whether in preschool or elementary school is called “The Wheels on the Bus”. In this activity it is suggested to fill a pillowcase with small objects like stuffed animals, balls, a pencil/pen, bell whistle or any object the child thinks should be added that they have seen on a bus any bus. Children can sing one round of the song; later children can pull a toy out of the bag and incorporate it within the song (Booth, Ellen B. 2004). This exercise focuses on the phonic development of a
