I would say that my greatest strengths are communicating, giving feedback, coaching, and developing, and recognizing. I think these skills are very important for employees to understand what is expected of them, what they can improve on and building morale. I correlate the measuring employee performance competencies to the yearly employee appraisals that we have in my office and believe this is one thing that I can improve on. For me, these yearly discussions are often difficult to have I feel that being too transparent with employees can be detrimental to their work performance and job satisfaction.…

Participative leadership is a type of leadership where decisions are shared and others are allowed to have a say. The leader allows employees and other stakeholders to share in how tasks are completed and how changes are implemented. Participative leadership involves “consultation” and power is decentralized (Yukl, 2013 p.106). This is a democratic way of decision making and increasing employee participation (Yukl, 2013). Throughout this semester, the most useful lesson I learned was from doing this self-assessment, which assisted in having a clearer understanding of who I am and who I will become. More importantly, they allowed me to better understand my own strengths and weaknesses, and how to better develop them. This understanding is essential to me as a future practitioner in the events industry. In this essay, I will discuss my own leadership style as “pacesetting” based on the self-assessment result proposed by Daniel Goleman (2000). I will first discuss my leadership strengths (e.g., time management) and weaknesses (e.g., lack of negotiation skills) retrieved from the self-assessment and my daily life.…

The first similarity I found between Katz’s three skills model and Mumford’s skill’s model is that in Mumford's, competencies and career experiences skills make a leader more effective and problem-solving. I think that the same happens with conceptual skill in Katz’s model, to me, this skill is equivalent to competence. The second similarity I found between those two is that in Mumford’s competencies we have social judgment skills which to me is very similar to Katz’s human skills. The way those two work make the leaders understand and have sympathy with the peers in the path to accomplish the company’s goal. As we can see those two skills approaches have some similarities between each…

While some people may think of event management as a degree in party planning, it is gaining credibility as a legitimate career. The Canadian Tourism Human Resource Council created event management standards which also led to the definition of exactly what an event is (Robertson, 2015). An event is “a social form that organizes interaction in a distinctive way” or the “gathering of three or more people who agree to assemble for a purpose ostensibly related to the functioning of an organization or group” (Beaulie, 2004). According to Michael Auerbach, “in 2006 there were 51,000 event planners in the U.S. and 39% of those were within an event planning company” which demonstrates the grand size of the industry and its obvious importance to society (2015). The purpose of this paper is to explore a career in event planning.…
